Google Doodle Tribute to PK Rosy on her 120th Birthday

Google Doodle honors PK Rosy, who starred in 'Vigathakumaran', the first Malayalam feature film.

On February 10, in honor of PK Rosy's 120th birthday, Google created a Doodle in her honour. Rosy is known as the first leading lady in Malayalam cinema. She was depicted in the doodle staring off into the horizon against a background of crimson roses.

Trivandrum, now Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, was the birthplace of PK Rosy in 1903. Rajamma was her real name at birth.

Since she was very young, she had an interest in the arts. Her uncle supported her in this by arranging for her to take acting and piano lessons. Rosy studied the hybrid form of Tamil and Malayali folk theatre known as Kakkirasi Nattakam at a nearby performing arts institution.

The first Malayalam feature film, Vigathakumaran (1928), saw Rosy land apart. It was directed by JC Daniel, who is thought to be responsible for naming the actress Rosy.

Acting as a career was highly despised at that time. The fact that Rosy, a Dalit actor, portrayed a woman from the Nair community in the movie also sparked anger.
