GP Singh named Assam's next DGP: REPORT

GP Singh, a 1991 batch IPS Officer from the Assam-Meghalaya cadre will take charge on February 1.

The next Director General of Police (DGP) of Assam will be senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Gyanendra Pratap Singh, the state's chief minister announced on Saturday.
Singh will succeed Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, who will retire at the end of this month as the Special DGP (Law and Order).
During a speech at a government event here, Sarma identified Singh as the new DGP.

On Saturday, the Home Department also released a notification appointing Singh as the new DGP.
According to the announcement, which was signed by Principal Secretary for the Home and Political Department Niraj Verma, Singh's appointment would take effect on February 1 as Mahanta will be retiring on January 31.
Singh said he is grateful for the appointment and would keep providing his best for the state.

He declared, "We will keep working to sustain the momentum the state has achieved in the last couple of years, particularly in the last one and a half years under the present chief minister.
The senior IPS officer tweeted: "With Maa Kamakhya's blessings, I look forward to the opportunity to serve the people of Assam. I'm grateful to the honorable Assam chief minister for putting his faith in me to run the illustrious Assam Police.

During the height of the anti-CAA protests in the state, Singh, an IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre from the 1991 batch, returned to Assam as the Additional DGP (law and order) in December 2019.
He had previously worked with the Special Protection Group and the National Investigation Agency (SPG).
